Playskool
The playroom floor

Playskool toys, sorted the way a playroom floor actually works

Everything here comes out of one playroom. Eight mats, one for each kind of afternoon — the sitting-up months, the swooping-hero months, the tracing-letters months — and every box that lands on a mat is a toy with the Playskool name moulded into it.

Why the Playskool name has meant chunky, loud and washable since 1928

Playskool has been printing its name on nursery furniture and pull-along ducks since 1928, and the shape of a Playskool toy has barely shifted: thick walls, rounded corners, a handle where a small hand lands first. Everything on this floor is picked that way. A toy gets a mat when it survives being thrown, chewed and sat on, and when a toddler can work it out without a grown-up kneeling down to demonstrate.

The eight mats sort by the kind of play a child is doing rather than by the aisle a shop would use. Rattles, poppers and gear stacks sit together because they all belong to the same six months. Chunky costumed figures sit together because they all get flown round the kitchen. Letter boards, number puzzles and table games sit together because they all buy a quiet half hour. Crayons, chalk and stickers get their own desk.

Small explorers do not read labels, so the mats carry the information instead: what is in the box, what age it was built for, how big the blocks are, how loud it gets. Parents can read the floor in a minute and hand the right box over. The fun part is that nothing here needs a manual — press, stack, pop, snap, draw. That is the whole instruction set.

Prices and stock move, because every box is sold through the partner store rather than from a shelf of our own. The figure printed on a mat is the one the store showed when the floor was last swept, and the figure at the checkout is the one that counts.

Quality

Liked this so much upon its arrival, I bought three more (Hulk, Batman, Spiderman) for our toddler. They're sturdy and well built, with no small bits for kids to eat. They're honestly the best motorcycle toys I've ever seen because how many actually stand up and are able to roll around without falling over? Our sons (even our…

They are well made, they look great and they hold up well under constant use. Hasbro has made a lot of money off of me by starting these miniature characters as my wife keeps them in her purse and other…
